Books: March and April 2020
Well, this is embarrassing, only two books in two months 😳! Many people have more time to read not less at the moment. To be honest, I am finding it difficult to concentrate on anything for long stretches and my mind is consumed with being active at the moment. I have also lost my five hours a week commuting time when I would listen to an audiobook (I seem to spend this hour a day doing exercise, which is no bad thing).
Under a Pole Star by Stef Penney
Flora accompanies her father to the Arctic in his whale boat, and befriends the Inuit which sparks a love affair with the area. As a woman in a man’s world, she sets out to lead a polar expedition. A fellow explorer, Armitage tells an outrageous lie that casts aspersions on a well liked member of the team and thus creates a tension which is a thread throughout the tale.
Enjoyable but not as good as The Tenderness of Wolves.
The Immortal Lives of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloort
A fascinating story of how Henrietta Lacks’ unique cells were harvested without her knowledge or permission during treatment for cervical cancer and the ways in which they have advanced medical research since. Skloort weaves her story of her fight for the information about Henrietta from her family with tales of how the cells have helped with research and to find cures.
Thoroughly recommend.
