40 Before 50: Cheddar Gorge

For someone who has lived in Somerset almost all of her life, it is a little embarrassing to admit that I had never actually walked at Cheddar Gorge (England’s largest gorge to boot). My husband and I actually did this walk in April 2021, back when things were fairly locked down still and it was eerily quiet in the honey pot destination that is Cheddar.

We followed the walk set out on the National Trust website, a 4 mile circular walk. It is described as challenging and I’ll give them that: the start point is a very long, steep scramble up to the top of the gorge on knotty tree roots and huge rocks.

But when you are at the top, the view is amazing, and you amble along before doing the inevitable descent, crossing the road and another steep ascent to the gorge on the other side.

There are some great spots for a picnic at the top on either side, and I wish we had opted for that. But we stopped for a pizza in the town, shivering outside (the lockdown rules at the time) making the most of the shelter as it started to rain.

There were some lovely wild flowers on the walk, I think we spotted some green winged orchid and wood anemone.

Love Mrs Jones x
