Travel: Shepherd’s Hut in Devon

Sun setting behind a sage green shepherds hut set in a wild garden

Nestled in a mini meadow between Totnes and Dartmouth is Rosie's Hut, a cute sage green shepherd's hut. This one not only has its own shower room (I'm too old or weak in the bladder to traipse to a toilet block these days), but also a wood fired hot tub!

We had booked a late, mid-week short break at the end of July. Now that I work predominantly from home, I do feel I need to get out more when I have downtime.

This gorgeous little holiday hut also came with an onsite three legged cat called Zoe and a couple of hens.

We stopped twice en route to our shepherd's hut, once for provisions at Dart's Farm shop and for lunch at Berry Pomeroy Castle owned by English Heritage. It is an interesting castle and also has a nice walk in the wider grounds.

On our second day, we took the short drive to Dartmouth. We had a lunch reservation at The Seahorse which served the most amazing menu of the day - I had ray, which I have never had before.

Dartmouth is a lovely place to wander about, and although there is not much in Kingswear (opposite), it is quite nice to take the little ferry across for a different viewpoint. In the picture below, you can see the naval college on the right hand side.

Overbeck's is a subtropical garden owned by the National Trust in Salcombe. It doesn't seem to matter which route you take, the approach is steep and narrow with many switchbacks. However, it is totally worth it.

The garden has a small tea room which does the most delicious focaccia sandwiches, which we took away with us and ate as a picnic on the beach at Slapton Ley. Slapton is an interesting place to visit if you are a nature lover as it is a natural freshwater lake separated from the sea by a narrow shingle beach.

Buckfast Abbey is another wonderful little oasis, and totally free to visit. The modern stained glass is quite something, and what better view to have tea and cake!

So, we had a sweet little stay here, sipping wine in the evening and watching the sun set over the Devon countryside. We fired up the hot tub just the once - the reality was that it took two hours to warm up, and we weren't that great at building a fire!
