Cycling on Woodbury Common

We were optimistic about the weather this morning and headed off to our planned day out at Woodbury Common near Exmouth. It took a couple of false starts to find it, as we didn't bring a map and most of the villages were called Woodbury something. However, after asking a villager, we found it easily - we drove into it! We stopped at the first car park (Woodbury Castle) and were a little disappointed that there wasn't a map suggesting walks or rides.

The going was quite difficult, even downhill on our mountain bikes because of the pebbles on the paths, which apparently have been there since the Triassic era, despite being so far above the sea level. And we did seem to descend a long way. It was beautiful heathland especially while the sun was shining. However, without a map and with the drinks and apples back in the car (story of my life!) we didn't venture too far before heading back. And the on the way back it was literally uphill all the way, and then it started to rain, icy rain and the wind whistled up the heath.

I don't think we did the common justice, but I am sure we will return, with a map and on a nicer day. If you want to visit Woodbury Common the grid reference is SY042882.
