40 Before 50: Eat in a Michelin Starred Restaurant

You’ve got to grab the opportunities while you can in these times, so when an open day to the Big Cat Sanctuary was rearranged for the third time (postponed from 2020), we decided to combine it with a night away and meal at The West House, Biddenden which is Michelin starred. The chef is Graham Garrett.

The menu at present is a set menu at £75 per person with optional wine pairings. Much as I would have loved to have the wine pairings, five (even small) glasses is too much for me especially ahead of the open day.

The West House is tiny, very relaxed and informal, so it's perfect if you want the fine dining experience without the pomp and circumstance.

Here is the menu for the evening and I can honestly say that every course was exceptional. Most surprising was how even something as simple as the asparagus with new potatoes and hazelnut butter could have such a beautiful flavour.

The following day we attended the Big Cat Sanctuary open day. This is not usually open to the public so it felt like a real privilege to go and see what I consider (along with monkeys) the best animals in a zoo. We didn’t spot the fishing cat or the rusty spotted cat, but at less than 900g, it was going to be pretty unlikely.
